A 60-year-old Augusta woman has been indicted in connection with the January shooting death of 29-year-old Cattory McBride, joining her grandson and another suspect in jail.
Angela Lynn McGee, grandmother of murder suspect Trayvone David Cummings, was arrested Monday following a grand jury indictment on charges of malice murder, felony murder, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime. The charges stem from the Jan. 7 shooting that occurred at McGee’s home at 1917 Walker St., located in Augusta’s Harrisburg neighborhood. The Richmond County grand jury issued the indictment on Feb. 25 after reviewing evidence in the case.
McGee’s grandson, 21-year-old Trayvone Cummings, and 19-year-old Damien Key were both charged with murder in January. All three suspects lived in the Walker Street home where the fatal shooting occurred. McBride was found at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Wellstar MCG Health Hospital, where he later died.
Adding a layer of controversy to the case, Cummings did not immediately turn himself in after being identified as a suspect. Instead, he waited until after his 21st birthday, using the time to post celebratory images on Facebook. His posts included photos of himself holding a bottle of liquor, stacks of cash, and showing off a new shirt, with a caption that read, “To more life.”
Following her grandson’s arrest, McGee publicly defended him in a post on The Jail Report’s Facebook page. She claimed she had been cleared by investigators and placed blame on others, saying the victim was lured to her home and that the entire incident was instigated by threats made against her grandson.
A local resident, Shanovia Howard, also commented publicly on social media, claiming the victim arrived at the residence with a group of girls and engaged in an argument with the suspects. She said he was told to leave several times before the situation escalated into gunfire. Howard also expressed frustration with recurring violence in the Harrisburg neighborhood, saying residents were tired of homeowners allowing criminal behavior while collecting rent checks.
McGee’s home has been the site of repeated police visits over the years. She has a long history with law enforcement, including a 1995 arrest for selling methamphetamine. She ultimately pleaded guilty to possession and sale, receiving 15 years of probation. Records indicate she later violated the terms and may have served a brief prison sentence.
In March 2019, deputies were called to her Walker Street home several times in a 24-hour span due to ongoing disputes with her adult daughter. McGee told officers she got into a physical fight after warning her daughter not to bring “crackhead” friends to the house. Her daughter, in turn, accused McGee of allowing her son Trayvone and his “thug” friends to stay there, while preventing her from having guests. McGee was arrested for simple battery – family violence, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, and received probation.
McGee is being held at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center, where Cummings and Key are also being held without bond.
